Hubris in Frankfurt

Gabriel Stein June 18, 2022 June 18, 2022All articles, Central Banking

The ECB has announced that it won’t tolerate unjustified changes in financing conditions. Neither the ECB, nor any other central bank, can know what unjustified changes are. The ECB’s behaviour opens the door for politicians to interfere in markets as well. Central banks in most western economies have for many…

Twin threats to central bank independence

Gabriel Stein May 24, 2022 May 24, 2022All articles, Central Banking

Central banks enjoy a reputation of, if not omniscient omnipotence, at least competence The current bout of inflation has shown that the omniscient omnipotence is absent It also risk showing a lack of competence, if they do too much – or too little Central banks have long enjoyed a high…

Comfort Suites, Brunswick GA, 8 May 2022

Gabriel Stein May 8, 2022 May 8, 2022Travel breakfast blog

It says a a lot about how disappointed I have become by American hotel breakfasts over the past week, that I was pleasantly surprised today. There were bagels, sliced bread, butter, and the scrambled eggs and grits actually looked appetising. And there was fresh fruit! However, taking a more objective…

Iris Garden Inn, Savannah GA, 7 May 2022

Gabriel Stein May 7, 2022 May 7, 2022Travel breakfast blog

I’m not going to waste many words on this. Suffice it to say that it is what I now recognise to be the ‘standard minimum breakfast’ offered by a certain type of American hotels. And even for what it is, a disappointment. 1.5/10

Sleep Inn, Beaufort SC, 6 May 2022

Gabriel Stein May 6, 2022 May 6, 2022Travel breakfast blog

Every time i think ’it can’t get worse’, it does. Today’s breakfast is the most disappointing i have seen since I began this blog. There was sugary cereal, yoghurt, apples and waffles That’s it, no bread, for instance! The tea was Liptons Yellow — again. A month ago I gave…

La Quinta by Wyndham Riverview, Charleston SC, 5 May 2022

Gabriel Stein May 5, 2022 May 5, 2022Travel breakfast blog

The standard (i.e., pretty unsatisfactory) breakfast of this trip. However, the scrambled eggs were all right and they had Earl Grey tea (in bags). On the other hand, no butter, just a spreadable vegetable substitute; and no bagels. So, same breakfast, same grade: 3/10.

Comfort Inn and Suites, Georgetown SC, 4 May 2022

Gabriel Stein May 4, 2022 May 4, 2022Travel breakfast blog

This rather sparse and unappetising breakfast is advertised as “our delicious complementary deluxe continental breakfast”. A case of false advertising, if ever I saw one. No fruit, no warm dishes, bagels for raisin bagels only, the cereals with loaded with sugar. I could go on but I won’t. 2/10.

Islander Inn, Ocean Isle Beach, NC, 3 May 2022

Gabriel Stein May 3, 2022 May 3, 2022Travel breakfast blog

Another very basic American hotel breakfast. Not much to say, except that there were no hot dishes apart from waffles and grits; and the tea was Liptons Yellow only. The fruit offering was reasonable, though, so I will still give it 3/10.

Hampton Inn Charlotte Uptown, Charlotte NC, 2 May 2022

Gabriel Stein May 2, 2022 May 2, 2022All articles

I am normally very partial to the American hotel breakfast. At the same time, I am aware of the fact that many hotels are scaling back in both scope and ambition. Nevertheless, this one was rather disappointing. Very limited choice, essentially cereal, disappointing bread (and bagels admittedly) as well as…

Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge, Heathrow T3

Gabriel Stein May 1, 2022 May 1, 2022Travel breakfast blog

I asked at check-in which lounge (British Airways, Qantas or Cathay Pacific) had the best breakfast and was told Cathay. This is menu only (there is a nice buffet bar as well but not for the restaurant). The menu was very attractive, good choices of Eastern (obviously) and Western food,…
